Denmark – the Green Solution House designed by 3XN is a conference center and hotel on Bornholm Island, a popular vacation destination in the Baltic Sea. The hotel allows residents to experience a world without waste, through the use of building materials that are fully recyclable or biodegradable. It features 75 unique green solutions, ranging from algae water purification to “smart” rooms that can be climate controlled with mobile phone apps. The building itself is designed for complete disassembly, where non-structural wall and roofs can be taken apart and used for other construction projects. An astounding 30% of the waste generated in Denmark is from the construction industry alone, so the Green Solution House demonstrates that it’s possible to solve this problem using numerous strategies in a cycle they’ve coined “circular sustainability.” Aside from conforming to various green building certification criteria, all materials in the building are fully recyclable, biodegradable, or locally sourced; an on-site pyrolysis plant turns food and organic waste into natural gas; and all grey water is filtered through algae tubes that allow it to be reused on site.
The Green Solution House’s mandate is to demonstrate green solutions, promote continuous improvement, and enable knowledge sharing with visitors from across the globe. The goal is to inspire future buildings that are designed and constructed so that they can be dismantled without significant impairment and loss of resources. 3XN developed the project in conjunction with GXN, which is their very own research branch that specializes in green innovation. GXN conducts extensive research on materials, fabrication, and digital processes that they can then be implemented into 3XN’s projects.
